Kaira Looro Architecture Competition – 2023 (INT)

Competition Project

The primary school project will be built in the Casamance region of southern Senegal, enriched by the Casamance River. Inspired by the importance of the river in this region, the main concept of the project aims to bring education to life in a region with limited opportunities.
The design is divided into three main functional groups. First, there are classes devoted to education. There is also flexible space for hands-on training and various activities. Finally, a larger public space than any other houses the administration, cafeteria and restrooms. The design of these spaces was influenced by the traditional “implivium” houses found in the area. The buildings are arranged in an oval layout with a wide open space in the middle of the roof structure. This opening allows shade during the day and facilitates air circulation within the structure. Different fields are intertwined and combined to represent the unifying aspect of education. This integration creates a large courtyard in the middle, providing private spaces where students and teachers can socialize respectfully.
The main entrance, located in the widest part of the structure, is inspired by the Casamance River. When you enter the school, the long and curved road structure, the walls that get thicker from top to bottom, the roof that curves towards the road and a curved light filter that illuminates the floor from above provide students with a river-like experience. Like fish swimming in a river, students travel from this path to the river of education and a hopeful future.
